Mature adult shown at BAS 2001 with rounded tail lobes; the tail is somewhat large and the body should be deeper, but it is a nice fish. Notice the black irises; ideally, these should be reflective (metallic) in calico fish.
Calico bubble eye shown at BAS 2002; notice the metallic silver irises, compared with the calico bubble eye above, which has black irises. The body colour should ideally contain more red than orange.
Calico bubble eyes shown at BAS 2005 (left & centre, the same fish), with shorter fins and a deeper body, as called for by the standard, but with smaller bubbles; and at GSGB 2005 (right) with large, well balanced bubbles (the colours appear dull because the photograph was underexposed).
Calico bubble eye shown at the Nationwide Show 2018, with well balanced but slightly small bubbles. (Photo from the Nationwide Show.)
Black bubble eyes used to be very rare but are gradually becoming more available. This fish has better body depth than is seen in many bubble eyes. Shown at BAS 2002.
